Underscore Native News

Underscore Native News, a digital-first newsroom, publishes Indigenous coverage of the Pacific Northwest for regional and national audiences. This newsroom model relies on audience-led reporting, local and regional newsroom partnerships and shared coverage at no cost. With wide dissemination, Underscore Native News’ goal is to amplify the issues and everyday stories of Indigenous communities.

The newsroom is one of a pilot round of early-stage investments in leaders of young organizations having outsized impact and in need of business and revenue infrastructure. American Journalism Project’s two-year grants are structured to establish these fundamental operations and prepare the organizations for future growth.

Myers oversees strategic planning, organizational and operational leadership, finances and budgeting, fundraising and external outreach. Before joining Underscore, he was a founding member and managing editor of the Flathead Beacon, which was called the “best newsroom in Montana” in the Columbia Journalism Review and named one of the “Best Places to Work” in the U.S. by Outside magazine, while also perennially garnering honors as the state’s top weekly newspaper. His award-winning journalism and essays have appeared in newspapers, magazines and literary journals across the country, as well as two anthologies. He is the president of the Portland chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA).
