The Richmonder is a nonprofit newsroom launched to fill the gaps left behind as legacy media shrinks in Richmond, Virginia. The Richmonder spotlights the best of the community while keeping a watchful eye on those in power.

In September 2024, The Richmonder launched with three employees who all had extensive experience in the Richmond market. As of July 2026, the team had grown to seven full-time reporters, reaches 160,000 people each month, and publishes a newsletter that boasts a 73% open rate.

The Richmonder won 20 awards at the 2025 Virginia Press Association annual contest, and was named Startup of the Year by the Institute for Nonprofit News, which commended the organization for its quick growth without taking on any debt.

With support from the American Journalism Project, the Richmonder will grow its development team to five full-time employees, who will focus on expanding community listening, events, corporate giving and brand awareness, laying the foundation for sustainable growth into the future.
