The City Reporter

Carroll joined The City Reporter as its executive director in October 2025. She is a veteran leader in journalism and the nonprofit sector, previously served as President of The Marshall Project, the Pulitzer Prize winning newsroom covering the criminal justice system. During her tenure, The Marshall Project’s budget quadrupled from $4 million to nearly $18 million. Before joining The Marshall Project in 2016, Carroll served as Deputy Executive Director at Human Rights Watch, a nongovernmental organization defending human rights globally. She was previously a correspondent and editor for Newsweek magazine in China, Southeast Asia, and the former Soviet Union.

Richard joined The City Reporter as editor-in-chief in February 2022. He was previously Executive Editor of HuffPost, where he oversaw the newsroom, including breaking news, politics, enterprise reporting and longform. . Over two decades at The Nation magazine, Richard filled roles ranging from Intern to Executive Editor. He was instrumental in editing some of the magazine’s most agenda-setting journalism, and in dramatically expanding its digital presence. Born in the Bronx, he was educated at Yale and New York University.
