Mission Local
Mission Local is the largest nonprofit newsroom focused exclusively on San Francisco. It started in 2008 as a news lab of the U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and went independent in 2014, focused on the Mission District. Now, it covers all of San Francisco.
The outlet is known for its street reporting that leads to deeper dives, and it trains a cadre of young reporters who reflect the city’s diversity. Mission Local aims to engage residents and keep politicos and power brokers on their toes in one of the country’s wealthiest cities.
In the last four years, Mission Local was twice named the best local site by the Online News Association and has won dozens of local, state, and national awards. With support from the American Journalism Project, the newsroom is placing reporters in new neighborhoods and plans to expand across the city over the next three years.
