Quadrivium Foundation renews support for American Journalism Project with $5 million investment

WASHINGTON — April 15, 2025 — The American Journalism Project today announced a new $5 million investment from the Quadrivium Foundation to expand its national reach, scale innovative local news models, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of independent journalism across the country.

This investment reflects a shared commitment to expanding the reach and impact of independent local news to more communities across the country. With this new funding, the American Journalism Project will invest in scalable nonprofit news organizations, bolster newsrooms’ core business capabilities, and accelerate the movement for the revitalization of local news.

“Local news connects people to one another and to the issues that matter in their everyday lives. It’s one of the few institutions with the power to cut through division and help communities solve problems together,” said Kathryn Murdoch, co-founder and president of the Quadrivium Foundation. “We’re proud to support the American Journalism Project as it works to bring this kind of trusted journalism to more people across the country.”

Since its launch in 2019, the American Journalism Project has supported 50 nonprofit local news organizations working in 36 states across the country. Their model is delivering measurable results, equipping organizations to grow revenue, expand their newsrooms, and produce essential journalism that meets community needs. The first 22 organizations funded by AJP have, on average, doubled in size since receiving their grants — collectively adding hundreds of journalists.

“This renewed commitment is a powerful affirmation of the impact of our work and the future we’re striving to build,” said Sarabeth Berman, CEO of the American Journalism Project. “The Quadrivium Foundation’s significant investment enables us to accelerate at a pivotal moment — expanding access to trustworthy local news and strengthening the civic fabric of communities across the country.”

The American Journalism Project is the nation’s leading venture philanthropy dedicated to local news. Through strategic investments and operational support, the American Journalism Project helps nonprofit news organizations grow their impact and sustainability while advancing a national movement to ensure all communities have access to reliable, independent journalism.
