Mitchell leads fundraising in local markets to help seed and launch new news organizations and to increase resources within existing local news ecosystems.

Mitchell has thirteen years of experience supporting mission-driven organizations working locally and nationally. Mitchell joins the American Journalism Project from Benefits Data Trust, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming America’s social safety net, where he led philanthropic fundraising efforts as director of advancement. Previously, Mitchell led fundraising for several arts and culture organizations, including the Grammy Award-winning new music choir The Crossing and The Kimmel Center, Philadelphia’s performing arts center. Mitchell’s work as a podcast producer at Philadelphia Young Playwrights, a youth-centered arts education nonprofit, was recognized with numerous awards.

Originally from a Christmas tree farm in Western Pennsylvania, Mitchell is a first-generation college student who moved to Philadelphia to attend Temple University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English. He also holds a master’s degree in theater from Villanova University. Mitchell resides in South Philadelphia with his husband and two dogs.
