Elevating community voices: A look at our support for Charlottesville Tomorrow
On Oct. 23, the American Journalism Project announced $3.6 million in new support for three nonprofit news organizations: Charlottesville Tomorrow, The Colorado Sun and the Salt Lake Tribune. Here, we share more about our investment to help Charlottesville Tomorrow grow its capacity to meet the news and information needs of central Virginia’s diverse communities.
For two decades, Charlottesville Tomorrow has been a trusted news source for central Virginia, dedicated to in-depth reporting on issues vital to the city of Charlottesville and its surrounding communities. Its reporting ensures the voices of those most impacted are at the center of its work. From affordable housing to voter guides, Charlottesville Tomorrow’s journalism has driven real change, influencing public investment and improving local governance.
The organization is deeply committed to community engagement. Its team uses surveys and in-person conversations to shape editorial strategy, consistently responding to community needs. The outlet incorporated equity into their governance, staffing and reporting processes, and is a founding partner in Charlottesville Inclusive Media, which supports a rich local media ecosystem. It’s also finding new ways to engage and partner with rural community leaders, who lack access to sufficient quality local journalism.
With a $1 million investment from the American Journalism Project, Charlottesville Tomorrow is set to expand its impact as a leading news source for central Virginia. Our investment will fund key roles in revenue, development and marketing, while supporting audience growth to deepen reader engagement and sustainability.
This growth will enable Charlottesville Tomorrow to expand its reporting, adding new beats to cover local public institutions, arts, labor and environmental issues. It will also increase reporting on the rural counties surrounding Charlottesville, ensuring residents across central Virginia have the information they need to stay informed.
Charlottesville Tomorrow is on track to become a cornerstone of local news for central Virginia. We’re proud to work with this local newsroom as they take on this expansion as part of their commitment to delivering trusted, equitable and high-quality news the community can depend on for the next 20 years.
